Comments:I feel so privileged to have grown up in the Te Anau/Manapouri area and attended Manapouri District High. I've re-visited several times and, last year, did the Kepler Track with my sister Toni and friend Anita (Luka), the 50 year anniversary of the year we Donaldsons left Manapouri for Australia. I, too, feel sad to see no acknowledgement of the site where the village/school etc was, it would be nice to have something to recognise where the workers families lived and where so many of us enjoyed (mostly) our school days. It was a great time and place to be a child and I treasure the memories. I wonder how often the current farm owners see people wandering around their paddocks (as we did) reminiscing about old times and characters, who have become much more interesting with the passage of time.

Comments:I attended MDHS 1972-73 (from memory). Although a youngster at the time I still recall many adventures and the rural community environment. My mother Waveney (Murray at the time) was engaged in relief teaching for the school periodically. She is now North of AKl and remains teaching at a local country school. It was my dad who worked on the project as a Civil engineer ( at the time he was in the formative stages of what was to become a successful engineer and owner of several businesses. Sadly he left us in 2016 following an unexpected illness diagnosed 12 mths or so earlier. Throughout his life he remained in contact with many of his colleagues including those who lived and worked in Manipuri. One of whom along with his wife now lives close to myself. Their children whom I met at the time and have known for nearly my entire life also live close and we remain in contact. Paul & Avon Mc Laughlin ( English ) now retired. My dad was Ian Murray - civil engineer.

Comments:So many fond memories and such an amazing time spent in Manapouri Hydro. I got very emotional when I flew over to see only traces of the houses still outlined in the field! I truly wish we could all get together for one last time..so many of us had truly amazing experiences and we all seem to feel the same. Met with Carolyn Schofield and Chris Hughes and have had visits with Yvonne Copeman and also keep in touch with Mitch Williams. Well done Peter and thank you.

Comments:Fond memories of the village and escaping to balloon loop, fishing for trout, swimming in the river before the dam was completed and changed it all. Its Xmas in a few days so wifey and I are heading to Te-anua for a weeks holiday so will check out the old village site and take some photos and remember the old days! I catch up occasionally with the Smiths family who were in the village 3 years, they had three boys and three girls, my best mate was Tane, we still see each other for a beer or two! Iain Miller you lived a house away from us, I had a crush on your sister Diane haha...I recall her boyfriend with the VW which had a key sticking out the back of it? Thanks for making the effort on your website Peter.

Comments:I remember a fort that was built near the flood control channel, there wouldn't have been too many forts built, so it must have been yours. I hung around with Kevin Budell and it was a friend of his that built this fort whom I met on several occasions. I went to school there, but can not find my name entered in the school registry (mid 1969). Anyway, great memories. We lived on Pleasant Ave, but can't recall the number. My father worked at West Arm as a draftsman, involved with drafting the formwork drawings for the scroll cases. Thanks

Comments:I assisted the start of the Secondary Department and thoroughly enjoyed my time at Manapouri Hydro. I recall the time when there was a Royal visit which shot past the minored where we were all seated and did not return. We telephoned the Airfield and a military helicopter came to the school ground and hovered just a few inches above the ground (It was not allowed to land) and provided as much highlight to the pupils as the non existent royal visit. A great memory. My oldest son and daughter started school here.(Michael Sept 1966 and Patricia 1968) Enjoyed my time there, Went on to Lumsden DHS and Northern Southland College. Thanks for this grand effort Peter.

Comments:Remember quite a few names from my era 1973-1976. Great days, even as a 7 year old, crossing the road to Balloon Loop and playing on the banks. Riding bike down from "the tanks". Mrs Kennedy, my first teacher. Having cubs at the hall. Building huts out of beer crates at the fire station. Hanging around the fire station while parents boozed there. Bus trips to Te Anau to learn to swim singing B-I-N-G-O etc. So many memories - still a little sad to drive past the old village site these days, with just the entrance roads left. What a place to grow up!
